55 years ago my grandma took pictures of her four young boys running around an empty lot, and wrote under them in the photo album "La Verkin, Utah. Love at first sight."
It was just couple of acres in the middle of a small Southern Utah town, but Harriett Monnett knew home when she saw it. It was less than a block from the historic pioneer church and the dairy, it had water rights, and it would grow the most beautiful vegetable gardens and fruit trees. Dad grew up milking cows and digging fence posts, but by the time I arrived in the 1980s, the place had become a kid heaven with a big pasture for playing ball, tons of trees to make huge leaf piles, and all kinds of critters to chase. My siblings and I considered La Verkin the happiest place in the world, not least because it was our home base for adventures to Zion, the Grand Canyon, and lesser-known wonders such as Panguitch Creek.
Fast forward thirty years and my husband and I had moved our family back to the farm, taking up residence in the outbuildings while we built our bed-and-breakfast. We got to be here to enjoy Grandma and Grandpa's final years and hope to welcome our own grandkids here someday! In the meantime we're glad we can be a part of your Southern Utah adventure.
